Spay and Neuter
1. Not too early
The maturity of the ovaries and testicles plays an important role in promoting strong joints, mostly in dogs. The bigger the dog the more important the role.
To illustrate this example, imagine two dogs mating; the female would support the weight of the male while the male adopts a position where his weight bears on the rear legs; strong hindlimbs are important in both cases. Important joint issues like the rupture of the cruciate ligament of the knee and early osteoarthritis are way more likely to occur in cases of early sterilization.
Scientific studies have demonstrated the predisposition of certain types of cancer associated with early sterilization in large dogs, where the Golden Retriever has been the main breed for these studies. There is no evidence that these complications would occur in small breeds of dogs and cats.
2. Not too late
Spaying your female Pet before 1 year of age and before the first or second heat cycle would decrease tremendously the chances of mammary cancer; however, after 2 years of age or after the third heat cycle, spaying would provide no benefit at all in what mammary cancer it concerns. Spaying your female Pet, regarding age, will always nullify the chances of a Pyometra, a life-threatening condition that is in our hands to prevent.
There are no health benefits in keeping your female Pet intact after 1.5 years old or having her a litter before spaying. Keeping an intact female older than 1.5 years is strongly discouraged.
In the cases of males, the neuter procedure or castration would prevent the formation of testicular tumors as well as the inflammation of the prostate gland leading to infections, pain, UTI, and constipation. It would also provide more docile behavior, which is great if Pets tend to be very territorial or overprotect their owners. Keeping an intact male older than 1.5 years is not recommended
